BU Law's new Legal English Certificate/LL.M. Program (Two-Year LL.M. Program) offers foreign-trained lawyers the opportunity to receive admission to an LL.M. program, conditioned on their successfully completing a rigorous, full-year program of Legal English studies.
Students who are conditionally admitted to BU Law would first complete BU Law's Legal English Certificate Program (LECP) -- a 25-credit, full-time, two-semester residential program designed to provide intensive instruction in English communication and Legal English, as well as a foundational exposure to U.S. legal discourse, culture, terminology and doctrinal concepts. Students also receive training in the academic skills required for U.S. law studies.
Upon completing LECP, students continue their studies in a summer Pre-LL.M. Legal English Program at Boston University's Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP). In the fall, they join the LL.M. program into which they received conditional admission - and become eligible to receive the LL.M. degree at the end of the academic year. This opportunity is available for qualified candidates who seek to join our LL.M. in American Law Program, LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law Program, Graduate Program in Banking and Financial Law, Executive LL.M. in International Business Law Program and Graduate Tax Program.
Professionals - both lawyers and non-lawyers - who do not plan to pursue LL.M. studies have the option to enroll only in the Legal English Certificate Program. These students would be eligible to receive the Legal English Certificate upon completing the LECP's two semesters of coursework.
Benefits of the BU Legal English Certificate Program and Two Year LL.M. Program Option
· Candidates who want to get on track to obtain a BU Law LL.M. degree but whose English language skills and test scores do not meet BU Law's admissions requirements can receive the training they need to qualify for the LL.M. program they want to pursue.
· Students will improve their written and spoken English skills, develop key academic skills and obtain background knowledge designed to improve their performance as LL.M. students - and enhance their careers as cross-border lawyers.
· BU Law and CELOP faculty are experts in training foreign-educated attorneys. Specifically designed for international lawyers, LECP is a result of over 12 years of collaborative Legal English programming between BU Law and CELOP.
· LECP students are integrated into BU Law activities and events throughout the year, further expanding their networks and enhancing their appreciation of U.S. legal education and culture.
· LECP helps students adjust to their new academic and cultural surroundings in the U.S., prior to commencing their law studies on a full-time basis. As a result, they will have greater capacity to make the most of their law school experiences.
