The Online Teach-in on Study Abroad Programs of the University of Exeter Took Place

On the morning of April 7, 2023, with the support of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, the China Office of the University of Exeteran held an online teach-in on study abroad programs for the School of Juris Master, so as to help students better understand the exchange and communication opportunities at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. Ms. DAI Limin, Senior Business Development Manager and Global Partner at the University of Exeter, gave a lecture in the teach-in. Attendees included TANG Yan, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange at CUPL, XU Shenjian, Dean of the School of Juris Master in CUPL, LIU Zhihui, Vice Dean of the School of Juris Master in CUPL, LIANG Min, Vice Dean of the School of Juris Master in CUPL, and CAO Huiqun, Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

Vice Dean LIANG Min chaired the teach-in, which began with an opening address by Dean XU Shenjian. He pointed out that in 2017, General Secretary XI Jinping proposed the concept of “combining moral education with law training” during his visit to CUPL. Currently, the School of Juris Master is studying and implementing the Opinions on Strengthening Legal Education and Theoretical Research in the New Era issued by the general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council. XU emphasized that the following four aspects of talents cultivation goals is essential for cultivating outstanding legal talents: a solid foundation in legal theory, excellent core legal skills, strong legal ethics, as well as an international perspective coupled with a global mindset. Students participating in programs for foreign-related lawyers and international arbitration of the School, in particular, are required to possess international thinking and international communication skills. Based on his own experience, he believed that legal professionals need lifelong learning and multidimensional growth, and international exchanges and learning can broaden their horizons and learn about different cultures in other countries and regions. He stated that this teach-in marks a new chapter in the international exchanges of the School of Juris Master, and he looks for the accelerated international exchanges. Dean XU encouraged students to conduct international exchanges and to become outstanding legal talents with both integrity and professional competence. Finally, he wished the teach-in a great success.

Deputy Director TANG Yan pointed out that the School of Juris Master is one of the most active schools conducting international exchanges, and has made new breakthroughs in foreign-related legal talents cultivation. She expressed her hope to introduce high-quality overseas educational resources from the University of Exeter to the School of Juris Master in CUPL. The Office of International Cooperation and Exchange will provide comprehensive support to help students engage in international exchanges and learning.

Following that, Manager DAI Limin began her lecture. She started by discussing the geographical environment and natural scenery of the University of Exeter, and then provided a comprehensive and detailed introduction to the university as well as the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, including its development history, research strengths, club activities, educational practices, etc. Her focus lied in the types of study abroad programs, training models, application planning, etc., and pointed out the alignment between the goals of student development at the University of Exeter and those of the School of Juris Master. She also briefly introduced some students’ experience at the university and highlighted its emphasis on interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research. She expressed the desire to break down barriers and provide more opportunities for experts from various fields to conduct academic exchanges, and to create an international community that provides students with international perspectives and experiences.

During the Q&A session, Deputy Director TANG Yan provided an overview of the timeline and steps for applying to the study abroad program, and hoped students to stay well-prepared and actively apply for their program. Manager DAI Limin also answered students’ questions in this regard.

Finally, Dean XU Shenjian delivered a summary speech. He highlighted the significance of this teach-in in further promoting international exchanges and strengthening connections between CUPL and foreign institutions, and expressed his hope for students to actively apply for international exchange programs. He also expressed his gratitude to the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange and Manager DAI Limin. Then, the online teach-in on the study abroad program at the University of Exeter came to an end.
